I need to view an .ai document does anybody know if there's a free viewer?

Never tried it but here's a link to a download that seems to deal with .ai files https://www.softfields.com/ I think it's a free download, but you better check first.

For issues with file extensions try https://filext.com/ Not looked at the site too deeply, but it seems to give help with finding how to open files of different types.
