My chainsaw starts up OK. It idles OK but won't run at full speed - just conks out. I've already cleaned the filter. Anyone have any idea as to what might be wrong? The 2 stroke mix is also OK. Gummed carb perhaps - not used it for a few months.

Was it stored with petrol onboard? New additives in petrol degrade rapidly & can cause damage to the carb. I was advised to empty the tank after use then restart & leave it run till it runs out.

Try cleaning or re-new the spark plug.

I was told that a lot of the problems are caused by the alcohol in the petrol and that the more expensive petrol have less alcohol.
I was also told by another source that alcohol content is very variable even within the same brand.

I would try the spark plug first as Ty Gwyn says. Having ridden a 2 stroke moped, I got quite good at spark plugs.

Sounds like one of carb jets is blocked or restricted. Some carb cleaner may help but if poss. get a service kit before delving into the machine so if anything needs replacing you have spares to hand. Do replace the plug (don't bother cleaning or adjusting) and clean the air filter first.

what they said but re the old fuel thing my husky races rather than cuts out on old fuel which seems a bit odd (and slightly scary) i do the drain and run through routine if i remember.i just remembered something what am i doing tomorrow

If you want to run the tool till all the fuel is used up DO NOT rev it up. As the fuel runs out its going to weaken the mixture so it runs lean. That causes the engine to run extra fast & hot just when the lube is at its lowest.

My stihl did the same thing. turned out that the fuel line was perished. Worth a look.

chuck the petrol and the stuff in the can if its over 3 months old. Clean out the carb. Check there isnt a perished fuel line.

If the can is properly sealed, it'll be fine. The saw stuff is likely knackered, plus the carb will have sticky deposits on it. You motor store will flog you a tin of carb cleaner.
