We had a fairly serious discussion last night about doing some work to our house to manage and maintain it in good condition and also to improve its energy rating. Part of the conversation included replacing the boiler. The current boiler is about 17 years old - it works fine but is inefficient by modern standards. Does anyone have any experience of modern condensing boilers? Any reliable sites/guides to research? We will be saving for this work so we have time to do our research

I've had a couple and know a few people with them. Firstly, a pet hate, make sure the condensate pipe is routing to an internal drain or very well lagged if it goes outside as it is prone to freezing and causing the boiler to stop.

A good independent fitter should fit one much cheaper than one of the national companies. It may be worth nosing around to see if there are any schemes that will give you money off a new one as your boiler is so old.

Some seem to be prone to problems so try and research any you wish to buy, many seem to come with 5+ year warranty which would be useful and after that a maintenance plan may be worthwhile as the parts are so expensive.

I think Which? has rated a couple of boilers recently but there's a huge number available.

Better in some places than others. We have double glazing, insulated loft but no cavity wall. Part of the hoped for works will be to up the insulation where we can - the floors are cold and draughty so they are part of the improvement plan.

I second this. It ended the life of my old boiler in the winter of 2010. I've made a little unit to go around it, packed with straw/old clothes to help.

My new boiler came with a frost-protection system, meaning that if the temperature dropped below 3degrees (it's in the garage), the boiler would kick on & heat the pipes to help stop them freezing.

ours only lived to tell the tale of a freeze up because Gino worked his magic on it.They are much more complicated than the old ones where the usual cause of failure was a croaked thermocouple.
