With consumer confidence and earnings growth at a low ebb, mainstream grocery shoppers are turning into serious bargain hunters, according to new figures from IGD ShopperTrack. But shoppers also claim that buying local is a priority.
The data, based on research carried out in July, shows nearly a third of consumers planning to make more use of discount stores over the next 12 months.
Nine out of 10 anticipate further food price inflation in the coming year. As a result, 29% say they will shop more with discounters like Aldi and Lidl, while 16% will buy more at frozen food shops.
Despite the focus on price, however, a hefty 41% also say they aim to buy more locally-produced foods, with 10% planning to shop more in farm shops and farmers markets.
Although shoppers are looking for value, they are still interested in maintaining their values and are prepared to pay for this, said Joanne Denney-Finch, chief executive of IGD, which provides research and business support to major retailers and manufacturers.
Nearly half of shoppers (49%) say supporting local or British products is important to them when choosing what groceries to buy. But shoppers in some parts of Britain are more focused on price: those in Scotland are the most likely of any region to focus on saving on money in the year ahead.
