From Freegle I've had a Greenhouse (needed to buy some new glass for it) a gas bbq, tents and camping equipment, gas bottles, LPG gas water boiler and much more.

I've also donated to others even more stuff.

Its great so get freegling now .

For those who don't know the difference many Freegle groups were originally Freecycle Groups - but they left the Freecycle network along with the UK director and nearly al the UK support team and hundreds of local volunteers when the US based Freecyle hub began using Trademark legislation to close down UK Freecycle groups and networks or remove their moderators who were asking difficult questions about central policy and financial accountability.
However there are now also many new Freegle groups founded since the split.
Freegle groups are locally run and antonymous - but affiliate to something like a co-operative of groups whose officers are all voluntary workers, elected by their peers and UK based. No-one draws a salary.
Freecycle is run by appointees of its US based founder who together with a few family members draws a salary - funded by advertising and sponsorship.

I've used it from time to time, to pass stuff on. Thanks for the 411 on that Mark. I always wondered why it changed from Freecycle to Freegle.

Just tried to join my local group and got this:-

Your request to join the ReadingFreegleUK group was not approved.
The moderator of each Yahoo! group chooses whether to restrict membership in the group. Moderators who choose to restrict membership also choose whom to admit.

Please note that this decision is final and that Yahoo! Groups does not control group membership.

Seems an odd policy given that they have minimal/zero information to judge people on. Looks like I will be staying with freecycle (OR if the moderator reads this, using the Reading tip)

That happened to me once, so I used a different email address and got in no trouble.

I am not that desperate. The Reading tip recycles but not in the way the moderator would like.

Just try again - assuming you are not a regular spammer or some such their has probably been a mistake
1) the moderator didn't get round to approving you as they are ill in hospital on holiday etc - Yahoo then sends a reject like the one you got
2) the moderator accidentally clicked the reject rather than accept link - very easy to do as Yahoo interface is definitely not fool proof - and sometimes moderators have been known to do their duty after getting home from the pub!!!

Use the owner contact e-mail given at the bottom of the Yahoo home page for your group to check out what's gone wrong. I'm sure they'll sort it for you.

I use freegle - I'd just assumed it was a simple name change.

The reply was within 10 minutes. Something they didn't like.

I value my privacy so I don't supply any info about me to yahoo groups. I also register with email addresses from 'throwaway' providers so I don't get my domain servers spammed. Other than that there is nothing to cause a rejection.

The reasons for making a mistake may be valid but I will give it a miss unless I cannot get rid of something by other methods.

This is because they may well have had trouble with spammers joining multiple groups (again from disposable e-mail adrersses in the past in the past and this is how they choose to deal with it

Do stick with it. I fully understand that it can just be easier to take stuff to the tip. It often takes a bit of effort to recycle stuff or re-use stuff, but we need to do more of both if we want to hand this planet on to the next generation in a fit state .

Dash an e-mail off to the moderating team -takes 2 mins - and they'll sort it for you I'm sure. And be gentle on any mistakes they make. My local local group has around 11,000 members and we save a lot of stuff from landfill with a consequent big reduction in carbon consumption (much less carbon consumes in reusing a glass or metal item - than in remanufacturing it after recycleing) -BUT its all done with a zero budget by volunteers in their spare time who usually give up their coffee breaks etc to moderate.!
