I was just thinking about the advice of checking bonfires at this time of year to ensure hedgehogs haven't made their home in them and this reminded me that I've not seen any in our garden since moving in. I don't remember seeing many squashed in our area either so assume we don't have many. I think this is a little strange as we have quite a good range of wildlife. Are they common in other peoples gardens?

We had hedgehogs and foxes in our suburban West London garden and we have them here in the Poole/Bournemouth area, too. We even see foxes out and about during daylight hours.

Last year we found hedgehog hoglets wandering around during the day and took them in. One died over-night but the remaining three were an absolute DELIGHT to look after for a few weeks while we fattened them up for the winter. They were real characters. One night, one of them escaped - which caused total panic the next morning - but we eventually found him curled up fast asleep behind the sofa.

When they were the correct weight, we released the three of them at Avon Heath Country Park, and all three of us (hubby included) bawled our eyes out in the car on the way home.

Word of caution ... we found a fourth hoglet drowned in one of our frog ponds. Hedgehogs, even babies, can swim quite well; however, if they fall in to a pond or a pool and have no way to clamber back out again, they will die of exhaustion.

Never discovered the fate of their mother. Their father (we presume) snaffles around occasionally, leaving ENORMOUS turds for us to "discover"

Love 'em!

we get them a lot around here, they love the empty milk bottles (which are usually covered in slugs) on the doorstep, a couple of years ago we heard such a clattering and looked out the front door to see one playing football with the bottle with his snout!
