Does any-one have 12 -20 (or any at all) hessian sacks?
I need them for drying nettles & docks for winter forage for my goats, but haven't been able to find any locally.
It doesn't matter if they are dirty, or have a few small holes.
A good rummage in the back of your sheds might unearth one or two - I would be grateful for any small amount!!
Thanks,
Anna-marie

I only have a few that I bought from the HDRA, and you can certainly buy them there. Might turn out pricey if you want lots, though.

If you have a local 'small scale' coffee merchant who roasts their own coffee from green beans, give them a call. I did this as a job years ago and we went through loads of sacks.
Failing that army surplus sometimes sell hessian on the roll - you could make your own...

anna - marie,

do yo dry the stuff and then put it in the bags or pack it into the bags to dry?

i have tried making nettle hay but the process of storing to dry it flat on brown paper is inconvenient and i have no spare space to do that
i could hang a couple of bags of nettles and docks from the roof of my shed though if that is a way to do it

ps
i got my few bags at the local farmers market from the guy who sold sunflower seeds and stuff like that for the birds. 30 p each

Try your local Indian restaurant. Bulk rice comes in hessian sacks too

Thanks, Alison, I will try the local Indian restaurant first - it is closer!

Nanny, I've not made it before now, but had intended to follow the
tried and trusted method used by a long-term goatie, who dries them every year.
She hangs nettles in hessian sacks to dry. This appealed to me, too, as it is easier to hang them in the shed!!!
Laying them flat on paper to dry, sounds very space and time-consuming! You must be really dedicated!!!
Enjoy the extra spare time that you will now have!!!!!

What about the mesh bags that other veg. come in? I.e. orange ones for onions, green ones for greens: if you want any of these I can get you loads! For the cost of postage.

Hi Mochyn,
Yes please I would be eternally grateful. It would certainly save me a trip into town!! (think of the miles I would save, and as the postman comes here anyway.......)
Mochyn, I will PM you with my address. Would you please let me know the cost of the postage, and where to send it?
Thanks loads,
Anna-marie

Would the white plastic bags they use for sand bags do? Smaller, but still breathable. I have a ton of them. The council give them out free to people likely to be affected by flooding.

Anyone's for the taking. PM me?
