Three plants delivered this morning from Deacons (plus 13 bareroot strawberries, I ordered ten, so I guess they stick in a couple extra to make sure there are ten good 'uns).

Had no time to do anything with them but have unwrapped them, and given them a light water, and left them in the kitchen (and the strawbs in the bath, with roots wrapped in plastic) where it isn't too warm.

I know we have books full on the stuff, but any advice/tips would be welcome.

Heaven knows where we're going to fit them in...

They're in "plastic bag pots"; probably 4 inch? They are surrounded by compost but I think that's just for protection, am sure they are bare root. Plenty big roots on all of them in the quick glance over I managed. I'm fairly happy with them, especially compared to A N Other Fruit Supplier Who We Will Not Mention Here. And I hear they grow like crazy so they should be OK.

I should have taken a pic with my snazzy new phone!

Are hops fussy about where they grow? Would they be happy (or hoppy) on a windswept hilltop, for example?

They like a deep rich soil, but will grow in most places. If you have a problem with the wind ( ) then they will be happy climbing over things like hedges, fences etc. I'm not sure how the hops cones would be.

I can supply the soil, and I'm not actually bothered about harvesting the hops. It's the wonderful acid green foliage I like the sound of. Might be worth giving it a go then.

Do they grow in the shade - I want something for a north fence, and thought they'd be ideal - I don't want any hops, just a green cover for a ginger fence!

Ivy may be better, hops die down. But if you may need hops...

Ours were from Deacons Nursery on the Isle of White. They don't have a web site but you can try emailing them on [email protected] I'm not sure if they could send to France, and the P&P may be too much. There must be someone in France that sells 'em.

If you want phone numbers then PM me, some other companies do hops in this country. Are you after English or European varieties? If you can wait a year there may be a chance of cuttings.

Are you familiar with the RHS plantfinder, Simon? Unfortunately a quick glance shows up only UK suppliers, but a lot of mail order ones who might be worth trying. The advantage of Deacons is theirs are meant for home brewing; alternatively, how's your German? Might the postage from there be any better than from the UK, and they should have some varieties.
