Although no power would be consumed while the thing was unpowered, its good not to lose the record of what happened before the power went off.
It makes it easier use with a timeswitch or a socket that is only powered by E7 or E10.
And it means you don't have to bend down to the awkwardly placed socket to program or to read the ruddy thing.
They are useful for getting some idea of how much the fridge/freezer/kettle/computer actually uses over a week or so... but most are not sensitive enough to detect the trickle of power used on standby - so don't expect to be able to demonstrate that (unless its a very thirsty old thing). My one thinks my radio doesn't use any power (the radio could, but doesn't, run on batteries - its not a big power user.)
Its great for those things like fridges and (tsk tsk) electric heaters that have an intermittant load, and those things like computers where its not possible to get a simple answer from the label...
Should be worth a tenner. (Especially as batteries are included )

Oops sorry, didn't see this, looks like someone kindly beat me to it!
I've always wondered about these kind of devices...but then I conclude well I know I should just turn off as many things as possible and not boil the kettle several times and so forth, so it's probably just another gadget? If you could share it between lots of households though (because I can't imagine you would want to use it long term?) it might be useful...or have I got the wrong end of the stick?

Its the sort of thing you could use to survey your electricity usage.
And you might dig out anytime suggested that your breadmaker was being energy profligate, or you wanted to check what the consumption of the dehydrator was like over a 12 hour run...
But yes, its just the sort of thing that you could share with friends. Maybe even be interesting to compare weekly freezer power consumption... (I did say maybe... )
And like recording car mpg figures, you could tell when the freezer needed defrosting...

.....Hi Moggins, did buy one of these, think perhaps the same price, from Lidl....as you say Dougal I could have worked it out, but was in a learning mode. It did alert me to the microwave standby wastage tho., so paid for itself. The monitor has now gone onward to my extended family where things just disappear into a black hole, never to be returned.
