...here in Essex! The little beauties are plump and turning slightly soft, it's just the right time to pick 'em and bung em in the freezer.

Happy gin-making

Haven't seen any here. when I was growing up there were sloe trees (maybe they were damsons? they were like tiny plums) in a car park on our street and we use to pick and eat them. we thought they were tiny plums

I'm sure they were damsons, 2steps. Sloes are so sour they would have peeled the gums back off your teeth!

We've found and cooked my first damsons ever this year...in fact we've just had a bowl of home made icecream with this as a topping. It is so nice I will be going to any lengths next year to get my hands on as many as possible.

Sloes though...hmmm. Maybe we ought to get a cupful and have a go at something just so that we know we aren't dismissing them.

Our sloe gin is on. Smelling and tasting good already, been on about a week or so. Should be a good vintage this year!

All of the wild Prunus have had a tremendous year.

Stew em, strain out the stones, then freeze in small amounts to add to rich meat stews, adds a really nice fruity element without making it 'sweet'

Well I'm feeling heartedly cheesed off - Just been for a walk upto our regular sloe bushes and found that they've all been chopped down by the council in their infinite wisdom

I wouldn't mind so much but they were on the top of Warton Crag and I've got a bad chest infection so we walked up a very steep hill with much wheezing and coughing for nothing plus I don't know anywhere else around here where there are sloes - so no gin for us this year unless we buy it

One very cheesed off Joanne
