What does "Cast on 3 stitches. Knit 6 rows. Pick up 3 stitches from long edge of work, then three stitches from cast on edge. (9 stitches)" mean please? The long row means the edge - and the cast on row is where you start. Will it stay flat?

It won't stay flat unless the rows after this include some increases at the corners, you will essentially be working round three sides of a rectangle. Whats it going to be?

Place stitch marker in center stitch. Row 1 (RS): Sl 1, K2, YO, K to center stitch, YO, K1, YO, K to last 3 stitches, YO, K3. Row 2 (WS): Sl1, K2, P to last 3 stitches, K3. Repeat rows 1 and 2 until you have 177 stitches, ending with a WS row. The YO will increase won't it? It's a triangular shawl.

oh ok, that should work, I would't usually start with a tab like that, but the increases will flatten it out in short order

Do you think you are meant to move the stitch marker up each time you do a new row?

centre stitch is always going to be a k1, with a yo each side, so after a couple of rows you won't need the stitch marker, just knit to the centre then do yo, k1, yo making sure the k1 is always below the previous one. Having the marker just before the first yo would work too, you won't need to move it each time, but it will be just off centre when you look at the whole piece

sally you just reminded me of my mum ,thanks sorting k patterns into common sense is a nice thing to be able to do

It does sound a bit odd, but as Sally says, it should work. I usually just knit it up and see what it looks like.
