I've looked in the usual places Amazon/Ebay for display boards and the one nearest my budget is this at around 135:

Anyone got one of their own they might like to sell or know of another source?

We have some similar but a bit cheaper. We have had them for years and got them through a company that specialises in display material. You should be able to find one locally. Ours have plastic round the edges rather than metal, and are not too good in the wet, so we can only take them outside in dry weather. We have found the most stable way to use them outside is in a triangle round a post or tent pole.

I could make something out of ply board but it would need to come apart/ fold up (for transporting) so need hinges, some kind of frame/ paint/covering, etc (not to mention blood/sweat/tears) before it looked presentable - not sure how much change I would really have after that?

I don't think you'll get a unit like that much cheaper than the price you've quote Otley lad.

Depends on how much you charge yourself.

The proper boards have felty cloth on both sides so you can use Velcro to hold pictures and other display items on. It has to be held in the edging and the boards have to be hinged so they fold up, and the top and bottom have to have a groove so they will clip together, as does the bit on the top. Ours has plastic edging, hinges and grooves, and it has done us for a number of years, but as I said, it is not too good outside where most of our events are held. Good for indoors though, and quite light. Plywood would be very heavy to carry and also if it fell on anyone, so fibreboard, though not as long lasting, would be better.

What sorts of things are you needing to attach to them, and how often will the information need changing? I was surprised how cheap custom printed pop up banners are these days, my last lot were about 25 each which may be a consideration if you don't need regular text changes

It was going to be for info/pics for selling my books at shows/talks.
Have you a link to one of these pop-up banner sites?

Have a peek at abc print in Morton on lugg, Hereford. Useful advice, and pretty reasonable prices, iirc. But pop up banners might be the way to go. Much easier to use, clean, and cheap to replace/update.
