Meaty meals for under a quid?
You can pick up bones from any good butcher for free (or nearly free). Good meat stock is at the heart of good soups, so I'd say that perhaps the best cheap meals are soups.
Say, beef stock, boiled down with dried wild mushrooms, seasoning, caremalised onions and some wild herbs (cow parsley is good, maybe some thyme from the garden), with bread from the bread that's going a little stale and is otherwise going for the birds in the morning... More or less a free meal. All I've really bought is the onion, salt and pepper. Not such an uncommon dish for us, and it's very, very cheap. |
