The council are accepting plastic bottles at the recycling centre in Cheney Manor, Swindon, soon. They are also hoping to put banks in the Haydon Centre and Asda.

we have managed to cut down quite a bit on the numbers we buy, but recycling will complement this

Our council are very good with plastic bottles (although not as good as the one next door, who collect them) but the bins get very, very full. My advice would be to try and go towards the end of the week, on Thursday or Friday, as they get really full at the weekend. Or find out what day they are emptied, and go just after that.

I use these a lot for cloches but always had a problem storing them (we dont have fizzy stuff so I have to cadge them all every year) but was wading thru some back issues of kitchen garden the other day and came across a pic,it was just a six foot garden cane stuck in the ground with all the 'cloches' neatly stacked onto it slotting into one another 'doh' why didnt I think of that???

You and me both Deedee. Thanks for the tip re the canes. Every time I open my shed door about 20 bottles fall out on top of me

If you wanted to keep them in somewhere, you could thread them onto a string. Our council have installed bigger bins for them, but now you can't take the lid off and empty the bag in. You have to post them all individually! Oh well.....

My granddaughter has found another way to reuse bottles. According to my daughter it was supposed to be a (very easy-going) cat, though the filmer seems to think it was a dog. i use them as clotches, and i have just started on a project building a greenhouse with them and old pallets. its going to take about 1400 2 litre bottles so if anyone in northumberland has any i'll gladly take them off your hands
