Quite important this year as apparently large numbers of people are frightened of feeding the birds for fear of bird flu

Feed the Birds Day 2005

In the run up to the RSPB's annual garden bird feeding event, the Society is urging people to get out into their gardens and take part in Feed the Birds Day.

Saturday, October 29 is the RSPB's Feed the Birds Day and is a great opportunity to step up your feeding to help garden birds through the cold months ahead.

Mark Avery, the RSPB's Director of Conservation, said: 'Wild birds are incredibly important in the lives of many people, the RSPB's Feed the Birds Day celebrates this special relationship and encourages everyone to feed garden birds. Our health is not at risk from feeding the birds in our gardens, and the food supplied could help them through the winter.'

Sixty per cent of us already regularly feed the birds in our gardens. Amanda Crack, Feed the Birds Day project manager, said: 'Feeding garden birds is an important part of the British way of life. Providing a little food, water and shelter can really help birds through the winter - and turn your garden into a wildlife haven for you to enjoy.'

'...Our health is not at risk from feeding the birds in our gardens, and the food supplied could help them through the winter.'
Feed the Birds Day marks the clocks going back and the winter nights drawing in - it's the time when birds and other wildlife need a little extra help as the first frost looms.

There will also be lots of family events happening across the UK over the weekend of October 29/30 to celebrate Feed the Birds Day. You'll be able to pick up useful tips and advice on how to care for your garden birds, from putting up boxes to what to plant.

Avian influenza and garden birds

The RSPB recognises public concern about bird flu and its potential risk. However, at the moment, the UK has a disease free status, and there are no known cases of humans contracting the disease from wild birds. It is always advisable to follow sensible hygiene measures, including washing hands thoroughly after filling and washing feeders.
