I've just found a disk labelled "Windows image backup" which has a couple of large *vhd files and a load of *.xml files.
It is probably all obsolete and can be thrown away, but is there any way to read it other than re-writing the disk image?

you might get date created in properties which can be a bit of a clue as to whether or not it might be useful.

VHD / XML could be virtual machine images. So if you install windows virtual PC you an probably recover it. The VHD file is a disk image (with incremental points so it's not like a ghost image), the XML will describe the disk image.
