This is by the architect that designed ours, good book, nice bloke:
The Green Self Build Book, Jon Broome

Recommended by resistanceisfertile:

1) A Pattern Language: Towns, Buildings, Construction : Christopher Alexander, Sara Ishikawa, Murray Silverstein, Max Jacobson, Ingrid Fiksdahl-King and Shlomo Angel.

One to keep going back to!

2) Rural Studio; Samuel Mockbee and an American Architecture of decency : Anrea Oppenhiemer Dean and Timothy Hursley.

A great introduction to one of the greats and an infectious approach to form and function.

3) The ecology of building materials : Bjorn Berge

Great overview of the true impact of the building process.

4) Frank Lloyd Wrights Fallingwater; The House and its History : Donald Hoffman

Fascinating account of the birth of a masterpiece (and compulsive reading for anyone embarking on a build!)
