I wish to buy some shares; not many, perhaps only 1. In the same way Hugh F-W owns one Tesco share, I'd like to make a similar investment elsewhere.

Anyone buy shares, and could suggest how to do so, cheaply, please?

Most banks will offer a small share dealing service.

Buying a single share is never cost effective (I take it you just want to annoy them by getting them to have the admin charges) but for small share dealings, they can typically be done for an admin charge of about 15 or so plus whatever taxes and duties apply. So small scale share ownership is a lot easier now than it used to be.

I'd start with your own bank's web site and see what options they have. There's usually a bit of a learning curve while you work out how the system works but once you've got the hang of it it should be easy enough.

No, don't want to annoy anyone, but it's probably the quickest way to see a companies balance sheet, and get annual reports.

For example

https://shareinfo.lloydstsbsharedealing.com/services/help/demo/LTSB_SD_ServicesPreLoader.html

is a walkthough of the lloyds share dealing system.

Wouldn't that information be in the public domain anyway?

You can get the details through companies house, but it costs to register, takes time, and the company can refuse to allow you, I think. I'm unsure, but this way seemed convenient and simpler. I think the accounts and balance sheet are less accessible.

I think most cheap share dealing companies will hold shares in a nominee account, i.e. you don't actually own the shares so I don't think you'll get the details you're after.

Some brokers might provide the information you're after though, for example:

Try Interactive Investor - you can search by company name and see summary annual financial information by clicking on the Fundamentals tab. You may or may not need to create a (free) account to get that far into the system - not sure, and I can't be bothered to log out to check

Hm, that's great, but looks UK only. My targets are Swiss/US. But thanks.
