My house is an end of terrace and as such does not really have a suitable roof for a PV system, but the terrace overall has a fine roof for the job.
Logically, it seems entirely sensible to share one large system: their consumption would tend to average out somewhat, but there would clearly be legal and suchlike other issues.

These do not seem insurmountable, but is this a problem that has already been dealt with comprehensively elsewhere?

It's called community solar over here. https://www.nrel.gov/docs/fy12osti/54570.pdf The overarching theme is that a group is formed with some common connection, and a solar project is installed in a specific location. Your trick seems to be forming the group based around the common location, yeah?

Yes.
Considering how uncooperative some people can be, perhaps the easier option is to buy up the whole terrace...

Almost certainly. But there are community solar projects out there, although I've not come across any rooftop ones. I hear Solar Century are doing a few and would probably have a sensible input for you. There is the FIT benefit, which would probably encourage most people, unless they are planning to be there very short term.

The Fit payouts have been cut to almost nothing now haven't they? Barely worth the paperwork.

Not sure what they are now, the solar people reckoned they were still worth doing, but they would.

4.32p/kWh (max) for solar 7.68p/kWh (max) for hydro, which I'm a bit more annoyed about: I can't imagine they had a huge take up on that scheme. https://www.ofgem.gov.uk/system/files/docs/2017/01/tariff_table_jan_16.pdf

quite a bit less than for nuclear if one takes the potential for end of use costs into account as well as � per kwh and the front end and in use financial arrangements.

the water one might be relevant to otley lad's plans though as using spare wind to pump water uphill rather than selling spare electric then selling the spare electric from the turbine would add value so long as the "loss" of that system is under 30% .
