We had a sheep die last Thursday. We phoned up the Scrapie collection service but they would not collect it as do not work Fridays and have to have it 24 hours after death. Phoned usual collection service. Sheep still waiting to be picked up - now the size of a house and looks like it is about to explode and stinks....oh yes this is so much more hygenic and better for the farm and environment than burying a dead carcase.

Sheep is still here - now been dead and ready for collection for a week. Absolutely stinks. We rang up collection agent again today - their excuse, too busy to come any sooner! Rachel

We have a neighbouring farmer up the valley who has taken to the bottle and nowadays whenever he has a dead sheep (which his regularly it seems) we find it floating down the river or washed up on the rocks . . . Reading your posting, I have more than a little sympathy, gofarmer. You would think they would be there like a shot to collect fallen stock, if only because moving a reeking carcase a week or so on is so much more unpleasant and difficult.

Never mind about encouraging it spread all over your yard!!!!

They are just so stupid at times, with all of their rules and regulations!!

It makes me mad!!!!

(Has it been collected yet?) They should be made to pay for collection now, not you - or you could just dump it outside their offices, so that they can see what you have been forced to live with!

No sheep still here - now been 2 weeks. Sheep has basically (not oto be too gross) burst, now joined by dead calf and dead lamb - hottest day of the year and we have a lovely pile of carcases waiting collection - I'll be damned if we are paying for them to collect it now. Don't fancy the job of trying to move anything! Rachel

I can't believe that the sheep is still there with you

I would hound DEFRA every day until it is collected - and refuse to pay for it!

Let's hope that you are due a visit by the SVS. It would be interesting to see what they say about it.

I suppose they would probably be more concerned about whether or not your medicines are locked away!!

Good luck in getting your heap of carcases removed soon.

Sheep has now gone - took two weeks.

Not actually DEFRA who deal with it - all done by private collection services/abbatoirs. Our nearest one is still quite a few miles away and next one after that in Scotland.

I have told other half not to pay for it, or at least not sheep, just others....but he is too soft and am sure he'll just pay up.

Considering whole point by DEFRA is to stop spread of disease and infection we had a carcase lying around the farm yard for 2 weeks.

wouldnt hurt to write a stern letter. Bet if it had been a pile of dead chickens they would have been round fast enough at the moment

Bet if it had been left in the field and a walker had reported it we would have heard sooner also...

Here's another good one...the other day a friend was trying to move a cow and new born calf off some land he had to vacate that day. The cow got nasty and started going for him so as it charged him he hit it with his stick to stop it and turn it around. Some friendly 'neighbour' in some nearby offices that were watching reported him to the police and in less than 10 minutes the police were there. Not that the police were bothered just said they had to come out. Yet if we were being mugged or robbed would take them an hour to come out! But cow beating - they come straight away!
