Got some violet garlic cloves to put in early for next year. Question is, how early is too early?

I put mine in as late as I can...I don't want them growing too much before the next year. Generally a little before the first frosts, as you need frost to get multiple cloves instead of just bigger singles.
I used to plant early as poss, to get some good growth before winter...

This will definitely vary by region.
Around here, best bet is to wait until Columbus day (mid-October) or Halloween, as early growth will just take up energy for shoots that will be killed in the winter before they can contribute anything back to the bulb. (but we've got "real" winters here)
