Got our charnwood burner up and running in the last few days. It's the first time it's had to heat a house this size (1650 sq ft) but it's doing pretty well.

We have 13 radiators, one above it's theoretical max of 12 but it's coping fine. Heat distribution is quick as we have 3/4" inc pipe for the house and the pump is linked to a thermostat in the airing cupboard so the boiler gets quite a bit of water up to temp before it gets shunted through the house.

Great draw as well, it lights decent sized sticks with only a few bits of paper.

Loads of hot water, plenty of lagging in the tank so it was still steaming 24 hours later.

Some drawbacks, it's rather hungry for wood but I'm currently going through the joiners leftovers so to be expected. I'm also fiddling with the thermostat and pump settings to make it as efficient as possible and to prevent the water in the boiler jacket hitting 100 deg before the pump kicks in.

Cost of new forest to provide wood for the future offset by reduction in mushroom purchases.

How much wood a year do you think it will use?

Crumbs, at a guess 2-3 metric tonnes per year, maybe 60kg per week.

Is that all? Admittedly I have no idea what a ton looks like, but keeping ours alight most of the winter goes through about five tons (this is by my OH's reckoning, but I don't think he knows what a ton of wood looks like either!)

half a 6 x 10 foot shedful, will keep it alight, perhaps 70 percent of the time. Hows that for scientific!? If it were our main or only method of heating, I'd want a whole shedful to be safe - we had to ration when it got to march last year, I recall.

We got the wood in last weekend - it feels like properly autumn, now, and its lovely to have the shedful of wood - like having the pantry full of jam!
