Here's a rather chilling link for you, whether you're American or Iranian (or Essexian, even):

What worries me is that people are so selfish, if people were prepared to pull together on things we would be Ok. But most peoples concern for the wellbeing of others doesn't usually hold up under normal circumstances, let alone when under stress. And once people's standard of living is affected they wont care who gets stamped on to get it. I might be going through a downer on the human race patch

I agree with that - just look what happens when there's a slight scare about fuel availability - people immediately rush to the petrol stations, panic buying, which causes a problem that proabably wasn't there, and they do this however many times they're told don't panic....... I really shudder to think how quickly anarchy would descend upon us if there really was a major problem....

I think that partly it's because people talk about Iran or Iraq or whatever, without remembering that there are millions of people there pretty much like you and me. The war on Iraq has killed what, 100,000 Iraqis? any action on Iran will kill similar numbers of ordinary people (not terrorists, supporters of terrorists, etc.). It's just so abstract that we go along with it,

I know that Leeds is a bit rough but surely a Land Rover or similar would be adequate.

I actually do have grave concerns about the course of action Bush is going to take re Iran. It does stink of Iraq up to a point and he is not exactly doing diplomacy re military force to protect Israel. I am not implying Israel should be left/ignored but there must be a more diplomatic way of phrasing America's concerns.

To give Bush his due one of the first things he did was ask Colin Powell to look into why America continued to support Israel given it caused so much grief.

The answer was, loosely, along the lines of: "If we don't stay friends they've threatened they might go 'mad dog' in the region and use what they have to aggresively protect their interests, f'up the region and destroy our oil supplies".

At about this time the US started getting friendly with Central Asian countries and to expand its Alaskan fields. Coincidence?

I think the threat of Israeli nuclear/atomic weapons being unleashed worries us all. Is that a good enough reason to threaten the rest of the area with american military every time he opens his mouth though?
