Another loading question. Is there a site where I can get a diagnostic done to check I have up to date drivers. Is there a way of increasing the processor speed without getting a new motherboard.

The windows update site will tell you if you have up-to-date windows drivers - if you go into Control Panel there'll be a link on the left that says "windows update". The MS Office website lets you do the same thing for office products. For other software/hardware, the manufacturers website will normally have updates in a download section.

Getting more speed from your processor without changing the motherboard and processor is called overclocking - not something I've done, but have a look at https://www.overclockers.com/

Mine is overclocked.It depends what motherboard you have, You need to know what FSB's it supports and wether your BIOS is capable of changing the ratings, some arent.

Thanks. I am getting there on this. If I was starting again, which looks very likely, Bearing in mind I have xp home, what anti virus sould you use, and firewall, etc. I was thinking of Norton, as I am having a few problems with AVG

Here you will find a big divistion of opinion I expect.

My opinion is that if you are on broadband use a hardware router/firewall. At �40 or so they are far better than using software.

As for Anti-Virus stuff, I'm the Nancey Reagan of the internet world. I believe the best way not to pick up net transmitted diseases, is the "just say no" approach. I think AV software is an ineffectual security blanket, it tells you you can "say yes", but the fact is that AV software is not 100% effective. You download iffy stuff, you will get a fubar PC regardless.

Almost finished my virus pages for two3five. Firewall XP - turn it on it's FREE ADSL firewall router - all are good, the more money you spend the more features that most people don't need are included. AV SOPHOS - 100% the very best Norton - Crap Oh what the heck https://www.two3five.com/virus_info.htm Not finished yet, but almost there

Why is Norton Crap, I am having conflicting advise and it is hard to make any decisions.

Norton have had issues with software firewalls, their support is sadly lacking, their update files are large compared to other companies (means it's a longer download) and they write blanket virus definetions which give false postives. Some of the issues were raised on RC by people other than me

I'd go for AVG and pay for it (you get a better service) or Kaspersky (the Open Uni use it). If you can find four other people that need a virus checker (or you have five PCs that need covering) I'd go for Sophos.

Remember that I do this for a living with major companies so support and update time for me are very important. If you're just going to fit and forget then McAffee's would do. Buy it on price if you just want something. Just trialing Kaspersky at the moment on the kids PC and very pleased. Only issue is that update check is minimum of 1 hour. I check every 30 mins
