With prices as low as they are getting, it is at least not an area where mistakes can be as painful as they were in the past Shop carefully and you will not see that radically a cost cut next week I hope.
It is also the case, that if you are not playing games/dvds and just want a browser/word processor, then the spec hardly matters.
For this type of work, I much prefer the tft I have. As you probably know I work a tft and crt side by side, so you can drag windows from one screen to the other. I read emails on the crt, but generally type and browse with my mediocre tft.
tft's do still vary a lot in quality. the contrast, response times and colour are all factors. When we were doing the colours for this site, I often got at cross purposes with Tahir as my tft did not show differences in colour that he could see.
So what should you do? Well you do know that a reasonably good spec machine without the fairly pointless warrenties can be had with xp and a tft for around the 300 mark delivered. I'd have a look round the shops and see if they come close. having alook of course at things like keyboard quality.
If nothing does, then Dell is a fairly safe bet.

With prices coming down so much I wouldn't bother at all about 3 year warranties, even if like you say, TFTs may be short lived. Mine's about 4 years old and still going strong and perfectly fine. I can't play games on it, you'd need a 16ms response time or lower for that, but it also sounds like that's not an issue for you. The cheapest 17" tft is a little over 130 ATM I think, so they're cheap to replace.
Dell do have a lot of cheap deals - mine's a dell. When pricing up, it may be worth considering going for the deal and then selling the printer/scanner/components you don't need on Ebay.
Also, definitely consider the cheaper ~300 deals from Dell and upgrading with components from Ebuyer - that works out at way cheaper than letting Dell upgrade your system.
Just had a quick look at www.dell.co.uk/tv:
DimensionTM 2400
Intel Celeron Processor (2.40GHz, 128kB cache, 400MHz FSB)
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
15" Analogue Flat Panel Monitor (15.0" v.i.s.)
Free Dell 720 colour Printer
Save 50 (inc VAT)
From:
429
379
Price inc. VAT & Del. Save 50.
Due to End 12/01/2005.
Pay Nothing for 12 months
Have a look at www.dell.co.uk/outlet for some reasonable deals from time to time.
HTH
PS Don't forget stuff like XP can be obtained by more dubious means..... |
