I don't keep them in with my chickens. They have a large secure ferret court.

yes indeed, ferrets dont need to be used just for ferreting - i have a ferret as a pet, no hunting- just lots of play and snuggles. he sleeps in my bedroom and i only find the poop a bit strong, but not half as strong smelling as a cat's turd, phewee..
The ferret himself smells quite lovely, i love 'whiffing' his fur ehhe.
females tend to smell LESS, males are stinky, ahem.

they are not for everybody. they are not cage animals and require dedicated play time, with you or another ferret. Try and keep them in pairs. try and rescue them too!
Females need to be spayed at 6mths old, if you dont breed (and please dont) they will die of anemia/blood loss. they require a mainly raw meat diet. So they do take quite a lot of looking after!
But i love them = and dont bathe them often, that just makes them smell worse as sebum comes to the surface of the skin and that can smell.

Sometimes the males let off a stink bomb like a skunk - but then they will kiss your nose and you forgive them : )

he loves noses! (maybe all ferrets like noses, some more than others perhaps)

and some beauty sleep - well deserved too

Ignore the heartless wench, AS, that's a lovely fluffy creature - far more practicle than a dog.

cheers all - he is a cutey (and another surprise, the males tend to be a lot calmer and lazier, whereas the females are very active and curious. but there is more difference between personalities than sexes).
also he likes going walkies on his lead hehe! (i get my ferrets vaccinated against canine distemper, as it can be lethal to them)

never ever feed them sugary foods (fruits, veg, etc) they are very sensitive to sugar - strict meat eaters!

hehe maryj ;-) oh and to answer the original post they are sold by breeders for �5-�15 but i got my other boy Dibbler from the Rspca at �25, all his vaccinations done, spayed and microchipped and helped out a ferret in need. so a �5 ferret can cost upto �150 after you've done all the vaccinations etc.

the microchipping is done in case you lose the ferret - dogs and cats can get microchipped too. It only work if whoever finds your lost pet hands it in to the vets and they scan it - then your name and details is in the chip! (the size of a grain of rice) strange.
lots of ferrets get lost, maybe thrown out. Im about to adopt another ferret who was found wandering swansea town centre - maybe he was out for a pint and his evening got ruined with someone handing him into the rescue centre, bless.

I'm often in Swansea - never seen a ferret trotting about there though!
