Hello all!
I was a-wundering, is the fleshy fruit wrapped around a walnut in anyway edable or useful or is it just a nice way of making something so ugly look pretty while it is in nature?

Aren't the shells used in dying?

They make a lovely dye which doesn't need a mordant (so no chemicals) ranging from light beige to almost black depending on the strength of the mix.

It's one of my favourites because the yarn doesn't lose its lustre.

This is me doing a colour test on my mohair:

Cheers guys, I'm learning so much already. I now know a new way to dye my clothes and that I'd better nip off and call an ambulance. ttfn.

And handling the green bits will make your fingers look like you are a chain smoker.

All my walnuts came down in the storm the other night - which was just as well, as that old saying about not beating your horse but encouraging you to beat your wife, dog and walnut tree was not mentioned this year.... (I don't think so )

I wouldn't recommend chewing a walnut husk as the plant contains a toxin called 'juglone'.

Which is supposed to make an excellent insect repellent.

Nothing grows under them and I know lots of peeps who won't sit under mine even on a very hot day - could be superstition like the may blossom indoors thing - or maybe the juglone goes for the jugular? The pollen makes you cough in the spring and you need a hard hat this time of year
