Is it illegal to release foxes? I thought it was only illegal to release non-natives, e.g. mink, grey squirrels etc? I've no idea what you can do though and we've found our local council is not interested in helping.

Keep them as pets !

seriously .. I would think that the best is to use a trapping method that kills them straight on .. ie fenn for mink and the likes of them ..

as for foxes ... no idea ...

I'm lucky in that I live in the countryside and in that I have the means to despatch any foxes that I catch in my fox cage trap.
Getting rid of foxes in a humane manner in surburbia must be a bit of a nightmare.
Using a firearm in these areas must be all but impossible and being surrounded by neighbours who love the furry animals must make the situation tricky.
There are ways and means of course but the only answer I can think of and its far from being an ideal solution is this.
Take the fox in the trap to a friendly farmer and get him to shoot it.
This of course means a bit more stress for the fox and a lot more for the trapper.
The trap would have to be put in a trailer because no way would you want a distressed fox in your vehicle.

Generally, as with magpies, you just put up with them. One of the perils of urban living.

Why should you though? In our garden foxes have done far, far more damage than rats but it's ok to control rats. Although I don't use poisons why is it legal to poison rats and grey squirrels but not foxes?

Anyone know if there are any legal traps for foxes that kill?

There's plenty of things I could take that position on - unfortunately i dont rule the world yet.

And I did use the term 'generally'. I suspect most passive forms of killing such as trapping or poison may affect the local feline pop. Actually, you've hit on something there....

At the moment it's still perfectly legal to snare foxes. I think I'm correct in saying that snaring is the only legal trap that actually kills foxes.
It doesn't kill them outright 100% but in skilled hands a high percentage of the foxes you catch will be dead in the snare but certainly not all.
I personally will not use a fox snare because it is indiscriminate in what it catches. Its an unforgiving tool and will catch badgers, dogs and cats as well.
For actually taking out numbers of foxes, its very effective tool, but it tends not to give a second chance to non target species.
