Over the weekend I was at a friends house and we had for dinner, raclette and by this I might the device that was used to cook the food rather than the cheese itself

I was rather taken with the idea and fancy one myself

with christmas up and coming I have mostly convinced my OH that we have the space to store one

My friend had the tefal racelette which seemed good but only have 6 pans. A little googling shows there are various different models with both 6 or 8 pans (8 would be ideal but 6 is fair enough) but other than tefal none of them have recogniseable manufacturers

So my question is do any of you already have one and if so which one and what do you think of it?

I think Mark has one. We're eating at his place on Thursday, I'll ask him. I rekon also that Wildfoodjunkie and her husband will have an opinion on this.

They are brilliant !

go for one ! we had one Raclette last week again and it's gorgeous ...
(we usualy bring loads of Raclette cheese over when we come back to France or when someone comes over)

the one we have has actually 2 plates on top .. one for "crepes" and one is the stone to cook one .. so you can cook your meat or whatever else on top while waiting for the cheese to melt !

Um, isn't raclette just a posh way of saying a fondue? Very Abigail's Party! (oh dear - showing my age)

Nope .. Raclette is different than Fondue ...

Raclette is the cheese itself (but you can make it with any other cheese that melts) ..

but the idea of raclette is a small individual pan .. fondue is a big pot with various melted cheese in it .. where everyone dips in with various thing..

You would have fondue savoyarde .. with cheese ..

and fondue bourguignonne .. with diced beef !

humm yummie ..

When we were over in France in August, we had dinner at my brothers' local bar and Gervase and I had thin strips of raw beef which we could cook on a sort of little cast iron barbeque/hot plate in front of us on the table - all served up with a lovely green salad and fries. It was brilliant becasue you could cook you beef exactly as you wanted it! I'd love to get one here - but no idea where to get them.

That's exactly what we have on top of our raclette thingy ...

And the "crepes" plate can be turned and it's a grill plate .. brilliant !

that's what I meant with the stone on top (we call it Pierrade) .. and indeed it's brilliant ..

so try to get one like us and you would kill 2 birds with one stone !

this is more or less the one we have (our is Tefal):


The grill part is a "crepier" underneath if you turn it upside down ..

Am I being dense? What does it do? Not come across these before.

What I am imagining is cooking 'things' on the stone, but what are the little pans for?

you put raclette cheese in the pans and it melts and you pour it over potato or any vegetables, I didnt know you could get them with grills on top, I have only seen the cheese melter sort before
