They are one of the oldest pure bred terriers in existance having been around since the 1600's - bred by the Border Tinkers to use against vermin such as rats, rabbits, foxes and badgers - they were also used alongside the Otterhounds to go to ground - For their size they have extremely powerful jaws and muscular development

Only dog breed to be named after a Literary Character - named after a character in Sir Walter Scotts book Guy Mannering

One of the contenders for the breed of Greyfriars Bobbie although the Skye Terrier people are convinced its one of them

Most breeds of Terrier have a bit of Dandie in them as well as the Wire Haired Daschund - The Dandie was bred into them to get the wiry coat

The Dandie Dinmont Terrier Club is one of the oldest Pedigree Dog Clubs in the world being formed in 1875 only 2 years after The Kennel Club, however the Dandie is currently classified by the Kennel Club as a Vulnerable Native Breed with less than 300 puppies born in the UK each year (39 so far this year!!!!)

There's certainly a distant connection with the Beddlington Terrier which is sort of a half way house between the terrier breeds and the running dogs.

The Dandie and the Bedlington are very very closely related - Infact there is a famous story from the late 1800's / early 1900's where a exhibitor entered a dog in the Dandie class and a dog in the Bedlington class - both won and both were out of the same litter

My terrier pup (sorry, big, grown-up bushing dog!) is a Bedlington/Border cross. His mum has also been bred with a whippet to get some nifty little rabbiters

But I'm not allowed another dog right now

I like border terriers too but if I was going to have another dog it'd be a jack russell. I have a 9 year old, very doopy and soft staffy and a crazy lab x puppy

Nearly had that today with my hound and the dog of the chap I was out with when she decided she wanted to grab at the rabbit. I was so proud cos my hound gave up the rabbit when I used my "Leave it!" command.

Once neither of them had the bunny, everything calmed down

dpack - do you think that if they become hunters of rabbits they would find it difficult to differentiate? My dog used to chase the cats and hens - until we made it very clear that wasn't on and that they were to be guarded - we are still working on sheep - but she is getting the message.

They are very close to catching a rabbit - there are far too many on my Mums fields - so I was hoping that they would become successful at it.

Hedgewitch - she isn't a hound. I was looking for a lurcher but one that didn't chase cats! However I decided that I was asking too much of that type and especially a rescue - so this dog was looking for a home and she looks like a small scruffy lurcher and I fell for her before discovering who her parents were. They turned out to be two dogs I would have never gone near - a shar pei and a chinese crested! I have learnt a lot about dogs as a result - and would now never write off any breed. She is swift and graceful and lovely to watch.

Thanks! Already am very, very alert to cats. Don't trust the hound at all, so make sure he has no opportunities. That's not too hard round where I let them off.
