They are very close to catching a rabbit - there are far too many on my Mums fields - so I was hoping that they would become successful at it.

Hedgewitch - she isn't a hound. I was looking for a lurcher but one that didn't chase cats! However I decided that I was asking too much of that type and especially a rescue - so this dog was looking for a home and she looks like a small scruffy lurcher and I fell for her before discovering who her parents were. They turned out to be two dogs I would have never gone near - a shar pei and a chinese crested! I have learnt a lot about dogs as a result - and would now never write off any breed. She is swift and graceful and lovely to watch.

Ruby she sounds very interesting! I had no idea what I was getting into when I got the saluki X grey. I went to the local dog rescue for a terrier, the terrier had gone and I came home with something I was told was a lurcher! I was on a fast learning curve as I'd never had a sight hound before and he was so very different from any dog I'd ever known

But I think the right dogs find you.... they are definately my perfect dog, although I would never have thought it

I think saluki x are very beautiful - lucky you - I would have come home with one - but I was trying to be sensible! We have promised ourselves pups next time, in the distant future - and I bet I will be looking at that type even then.

He is beautiful - and people just love to touch him, and little kids come and fling thir arms round his neck

Good job he is very placid and good natured as well as beautiful

my yellow one will go for cats , unfortunatly he has met them in a bad way and has a deep hatred of them
my daft grey hound was fine unless they ran but as an ex track dog had no snap and so raced past them much to their relief
my terrier had several
i think that cats seem about prey sized to most hunting dogs ,ive got an exception with my big un now and had one other who seemed to love cats and was very nice with them but neither of these were hunters
once dogs have made a kill they will want to do it again ,fine if it is thumper etc but embarrassing /sad if it is pusscat .

Dpack, you've confirmed what I thought with my lad.

He's always hated cats and I will continue not to trust him

As he's a rescue, I've no idea if he had a bad experience or if it's just a prey instinct with him. He's learned to be fine with sheep, but this was more a matter of making sure he knew they weren't prey - ever.

He's very different with cats, although we have called him off chasing one - not easy but he did turn off the chase and come back to us.

yellow muppet is fine and very calm with cattle , horses he likes ,sheep he is scared of since he met some very big rough ones who chased him with intent

that cured that

i dont think he has met a pig i think he would respect one
anything smaller he recons is probably dinner or danger so im quite careful about where he runs cos he is good at it
he is wary of rodents otherwise id have him ratting ,he will point them but wont go near since he met a mouse in a sack of dogfood

odd critters dogs
big one never bothers to go out of sight for more than a moment and wouldnt notice prey if it sat on him apart from ducks (him and his dad caught one in public at a folk festival

and he wants another )he is scared of fish until its cooked

all dogs are different but cats are often unpopular with them

Right here goes, my first post.........

Saluki/greys are great dogs, got one myself, a youngster and still learning her trade really.Heres a pic of her with her first catch earlier in the autumn...../

Shes learning fast and retreives live to hand, though it took a fair bit of training!
Shes under the very capable wing of Sophie my older lurcher, who is an expert harvester of game for the freezer

Between the two were always in fresh meat during the winter before we even think about the domestic livestock!
