(Mod's please feel free to move this to chat if you think it goes better there)

Anyone else give their menfolk a quick trim?

Can't cut me own but would like to know how to colour it myself ( perhaps you have some recipes?)naturally if possible ( I'd rather not be'worth it' thanx)

Anyone a hairdresser in a former life and could give hints and tips on hair trimming etc, etc?

I used to, but it took ages, the results looked dreadful and he always ended up saying "don't worry it will grow out". So I decided we weren't that hard up any more

i trim my boys hair ( they're 6 and 8 ) but I'm not very brave so don't cut much off. I do OH but again gingerly, but he seems genuinely pleased with it. They then all go to the hairdresser occasionally to re-establish the shape. I don't do too bad a job, but would like to do better.

My own hair used to be very long and it was quite easy to trim the ends and do my own fringe, but with age ( what ever that means) my hair has got shorter and I couldn't manage it now, too complicated a cut!

I cut an ex boyfriends hair once... could be one of the reasons he is an ex? I dont know.

I very rarely go to the hairdressers myself..... however, I have a friend who comes round every few weeks and does mine for me.

So thats my tip, make friends with someone who knows what they are doing... (she doesnt necessarily know what she is doing but seems to get half decent results so hey, i'm happy)

As for hair dyes, theres a couple of idea's on here..https://www.pioneerthinking.com/hair.html

but you have to use a couple of the rinses daily for a result which in all fairness would be a bit too much effort for me personally.

I cut my own fringe......that's about all I dare do.
When I go to the Hairdresser's she always comments..
"See we've had a little fringe trim Denise!!!!"
Holland and Barret did do a natural colouring range, but I don't think they do this anymore!

I've been trying to persuade the OH to do mine (longish, no discernible style to get wrong ) but I think he is frightened, and I'm too scared to do his.

We could do with a "his and hers" (or hers and hers or his and his) class! Mine only gets cut about every 6 months; last time I got my heavily pregnant sister to do it

not intended to be at all!! I only have menfolk in the house and as I can't cut my own... If I had daughters the same thread would be started.

How much do you charge for a trim then?

I'll confess I approach it with a fair bit of terror

But I don;t think in her case I do any worse than a hairdressers, she always claims to have had complements at work

I used to cut my husbands hair which was very thick and curly. I got a couple of books out from the library and read up what the basics were and had a go, we were students at the time so it didn't matter too much how bad it was.

Now, I tell him to go and pay for a cut, his hair is not so thick and it takes more skill to cut. He also became more demanding over the years of what he wanted in the way of style. I was finding it a real chore, added to the fact when I handed him the sissors to cut mine he always refused dead flatly.

Both men in my house have short hair; we invested in one of the shaver gadgets some years ago, and it's been worth its weight in gold. OH does his, and one of us does our son's. I cut my own hair once a year in spring, quite short for the summer, then let it grow over autumn and winter. I cut my daughter's hair as well. It's a matter of patience and practice.

For dyeing, I use henna; buy it by the ounces in health food shops - brown, red, black, blonde. Henna is easily grown from seed if you want to grow your own, but as far as I am aware there is only the red colour available. When it's mixed up with water to a paste, just be warned it smells like camel dung, and will stain everyhting it comes into contact with.
I'm growing my own this year - Suffolk Herbs have the seeds.

I've often thought would it be possible to get a pair of the barbers clippers to do a simple short back and sides. It's just the top bit that would trouble Bugs. I've suggested an No. 1 all over but she's not keen. It would take less washing and save on barbers bills.

Perhaps not while I'm at work but when we I do give up I'll have to give it a go.
