Well, having been told last week that there were no allotments available after all on a lovely little site on the common by the village church, the gentleman that runs it called last night to say that one had become available and did I want to take a look?

So I have just been down to see it, and nearly fell over with shock and delight!

It is newly dug over and manured, not a weed in sight, and has a 10ft row of raspberry canes, about 15 currant bushes, a huge strawberry patch, asparagus bed, rhubarb, artichokes, garlic, chives, flat and curly parsley, lemon balm, rosemary, sage, and a whole load of other herbs.

The soil is ready to start planting today! I can't believe my luck

If the rhubarb patch is particularly productive this year Nettie, you might want to wait a year or two before turning it in to crumble You're so lucky, and at least it's gone to someone who fully appreciates it...I know a few friends of friends who are getting allotments and wouldn't know an artichoke if it bit them.

The previous occupant is an elderly lady with a disabled son, and sadly it's all got a bit too much for her. She very kindly is letting me keep all the existing plants. Am off now to stick some spuds and onions in!

Most of my container veg will be moving house but I I'll be keeping the lettuces at home under close guard so the rabbits can't get them

After spending all afternoon, 5 barrow loads of grass and weeds to the heap, leaving me with a strip 3' X 15' all i can say is ( through gritted teeth) you lucky so and so ! Best of luck. Dave

Brilliant, Nettie. You were about all used up in bad luck, so good had to come soon. I expect two more good things wil happen now. (need a gardener, Kylie?)
