Most farmers would be delighted if someone offered to come along and kill their rabbits and pigeon. In that sense, the poacher who broke the law to feed his family is a thing of the past - you can do the same thing legally now.

And even if they didn't it gives no right to theiving scum to help themselves !!!!! Like I say it is theft pure and simple, usually carried out by them who can't be bothered to get off their arses and do a days work to pay for their families like most decent people.

I'm willing and able to imagine a past where the downtrodden and meat deprive peasantry could be supported in the act of poaching on the vast estates of the bloated aristocracy.

But I think currently you'd really have your work cut out to convince me that poaching is not generally a criminal act done for gain and with inherent violence and little care for the countryside.
