All 'traditional' utility breeds take longer than purpose-bread hybrids to get to a killing weight. Marans are supposed to be good egg layers and good meat birds - nice white flesh, apparently?

Yes---the ones we've eaten cooked beautifully---the legs were meatier than the breasts ---but they are cockrells---and it's taste I'm after---I'm going to swap half the new females for half of last years hens---so I'll know what they are like as boiling fowl as well later.

Yay - the man we bought the chooks from said we'd get our first eggs in 15 days - and 15 days later we got our first egg

Since then we have had a total of 4 - (3 small and one large.) I'm so proud of my girls

you'll also be having fried egg butties, scrambled eggs, omlettes and baked egg custard for afters when you have 119 to get through like I did on monday Luckily I've managed to swap 20 for a bag of mince so I get a bit of a change on saturday....

I'm also thinking decadent cakes that need 8 eggs, meringue, cheesecake, eggs flamenco, souffls, bread and butter pudding, egg curry........ and likewise I plan to be doing swaps with them.

So what are you going to do with the mince then?

No I put various coats on them and traybake in the oven---I've given up deep frying as well.
