Got my first chicken of the woods of the year at lunchtime. Something in the region of 3kg. Enough to be going on with

Was any sprightly climbing required.

What do you plan on doing with it?

No, it was all easily reachable. In amongst the nettles, unfortunately.

Some we'll stew with something, probably beef and St. Georges mushrooms. Much of it we'll freeze. Some will be given away. Some of it will go in a curry this evening.

I always keep some in the freezer so I've got something exciting for a barbecue for vegetarians; marinade in olive oil, herbs and a splash of wine for a few hours, and it makes great vege kebabs.

I'm so jealous, I've always wanted to find one but have never spotted even a scruffy specimen. Post a picture will you?

A picture taken in the same spot a couple of years back is here:

I'll try to put other pictures of it up; a different image of it will be in the forthcoming May article.

Might I suggest that you might be lucky if you keep your eye on dead willows and poplars; from now till the end of summer, really, any time it's been damp enough and maybe a little warm. I've always found more on willow and poplar than anywhere else.

What does it taste like?

Is it something that has little flavour but absorbs flavours of things that are cooked with it or does it have a flovour of its own?

Tastes like chicken. Really. Mushroomy chicken. Very pleasant.

The texture is kind of almost chickeny too.

Goodness me. Once my hangover has passed I shall have to go to my spot in the woods!

Bugs and I were out in the woods today and found a small chicken of the woods, more a bantam. We managed to get a couple of not very good pics. I took a small bracket to try and left the rest as it seemed so young.

I was going to add one myself after a few people have seen them and confirmed what they are. They're not poisonous or I'd not be here typing this.
