We have chickens in a shed and I need to make a nesting box or a dark place for them to lay their eggs. Any ideas anyone? I am no carpenter though!

Use a cardboard box and recycle it once it's past its best?

We have used an old wooden wine crate bought for a couple of quid from our local wine merchant. They make great seed-trays / planters too!!

I'm sure I've used a big dark bucket propped on its side with bricks before?

One of those slightly floppy rubbery/plastic skep things with handles. Has the added advantage that it is too unstable for them to try to perch on ... and easy to wash out .

A slatted wooden tomato box of the sort tomatoes are displayed in greengrocers shops as opposed to supermarkets is ideal. Put a good layer of straw in the box and the hens will use it no problem.

I've just converted an old cupboard - took out the dividery bits, replaced one to split it in half, left the doors on for a lid to get at hens and eggs and took the bottom off for hen access. I was lucky that the base was in 3 parts and I only took the middle section off.

Here's mine:

With the lid closed above - nice and cosy and dark for the hens to lay.
And below with the lid/doors open for ease of egg collection and cleaning.

I'm pleased with it.
