I don't want big trees though, just bushy hedge; otherwise my plot will become unworkable due to the roots.

Had a cherry tree close to my spud plot one year. It was a nightmare getting the spuds up.

I'm favouring laurel still, sorry. I do have a couple of hazel trees in tubs which I'd be happy incorporating to save me being bannished from here ....

Just plant one birch tree as well, so you have something to beat yourself with.

blackthorn is rather difficult
horrid to crawl through
for a fast simple windbreak hazel might be a good main componant
