I think reducing is one of the best ideas, because so much of of it is so unecessary in the first place, so it wouldn't make much difference to most people. but unless you start charging, people will just carry on. I bet if you had to pay for carrier bags, then string bags would start appearing all over the place. I have had a go at ocado, because of their shocking underpacking (you frequently get a bag with one thing in!) And they bring it into your house in a plastic box anyway. I'd rather they tipped the stuff out onto the floor - it's not as if I' taking it anywhere from the kitchen. They could use paper bags if their really think their customers are going to make that much of a fuss! I'd also be happy for them to leave the box, and be fined if I didn't return it. Or you could have the bags for life, and simply be charged for every one you don't return (they are cotton)

I think the key to controling dumping is regular collection. In spain, it's not a system, but where you put your rubbish for collection. It's the culture that means people help themselves. They are shocking at dumping though, and people who don't have collection points just chuck their stuff off cliffs and things. Some you win......

For a family of 5 1 box collection every other week os not enough. I am fed up seeing bits of paper floating around our house. We need another box!

Your coundil will supply you with another box, but will probably charge for it. Otherwise, could you just put it out in a cardboard box, alongside the other one, then the whole thing could go at once. We brought our last box with us when we moved here, and have two. topically, the recycling lorry is emptying ours right at this minute - can you hear them?!

The noise they make, you shouldn't need your speakers on................. Believe it or not, some people complain about the noise of the stuff going into the bins in the lorry.....................

Some people will complain about anything. My sister in law is wheelchair bound, and the people in her building complained about her having a ramp fitted so that she could get into her flat! She's a solicitor, and sorted them out though! I must empty my paper basket actually, it reached overflowing about a month ago!

Mid-Suffolk DC is moving to a two bin regime at the moment. One for non-recylable and one for recyling, and the collections will alternate each week. Only problem is we won't get it until September 2006!

Thats all right, we have one of our bins, and not the other yet, although we have had about 5 letters telling us about it coming, and our drive is too long for us to have to use one anyway!!

We're in Maidstone and dont get paper,cardboard,plastic or tins collected for recycling.This last year we have been given a box for glass to be collected every second week and we can buy green bags to fill with garden waste to be collected the other week.Other than that its the ordinary rubbish collection or take it to a recycling bank by the supermarket.
I'd be happy with just a paper collection as we only get the free papers and still end up with piles of them even though we do reuse them in crafts.
There is a large rubbish collection about once in 6 weeks where you can haul your broken furniture etc,it used to be a skip (which we raided ) We have managed to rescue 1 or 2 bits that nearly got crushed and found a home for them.
In Holland they have plastic bottle collections in supermarkets and nearly everyone has sturdy shopping bags,we bought some when we were there and have used them ever since.

This week, at last, we have been left our green bins. The stupidity of it all was that we couldn't leave it not in the bins and bags, while we were waiting for them. If you cannot put your milk carton lids into your recycle box then McDonalds, EAstern Way, Barnstaple are collecting them for a girls wheelchair, if you want to send some there. Just got to sort out the junk mail now.

our council have just started supplying us with orange bags into which goes everything paper,glass and plastic all together then you put it out with the normal rubbish on bin day, the clever part i think is there is two bin collections one picks up the orange bags the other the normal rubish and as the rubbish trundles off to the landfill the orange bags are taken to a sorting station and tipped out on to a table where people are paid to sort it for recycling. we can put out as many orange bags aswe like, it takes no time for us to do as we just bought a second kitchen bin for the orange bag so we now recycle everything and we now only have about 1 rubbish bag a week and orange bags. it works great and as far as i can see everyone wins in the end.

We have two bins in our kitchen, and then sort the recycle bin to futher sections once outside.

I wish that everything that could be made from recycled materials was. It's ridiculous that virgin wood pulp is used for wiping bottoms.

Me too. I kept hold of old batteries for years waiting for them to recycle. They seem the most obvious as they don't take much to collect and can contain very toxic chemical. In then end I had to bin them as I was told by our council that no one recycles them in this country.

Do you mean small domestic batteries? If so LOTS of shops seem to have a collection tub these days....Boots IIRC has one on the counter here, Aldi have one, and I think I've seen one at the farm co-op shop here too. I've taken to putting them in a small bag in my hand bag, and dropping them in when I notice a tub.
