Ingredients


  • 450g Pieces of white fish, skinned and boned. ( I've bought half whiting and half haddock )

  • 570ml full-fat milk.

  • 50g of marg or butter

  • 2 tbsp of plain flour

  • salt and pepper

  • pinch of mustard powder

  • 125g strong Cheddar cheese grated

  • 2 large potatoes (675g) cooked and mashed with butter and milk

  • 2 hard-boiled eggs sliced

  • 2 tomatoes, sliced




Recipe


  1. Get the oven up to 150�C/ 300�F/gas mark 2. Cook the fish by poaching it in the milk until just translucent. Take the fish out of the milk.

  2. Make the cheese sauce by melting the marg and stirring in the flour for a couple of minutes over a low heat to make the roux. Heat the milk from the fish poaching until just below the boil and whisk it gradually into the roux. Season with the salt and the pepper and a pinch of mustard powder. Stir in a 100g of the grated cheese.

  3. Flake the cooked fish into the cheese sauce. In a greased oven-proof dish, layer up the pie as follows: a small amount of potato ; half the fish in cheese sauce; the sliced hardboiled eggs; the sliced tomatoes; the other half of the fish in cheese sauce; the rest of the potato. Scatter the remaining grated cheese on the top and put in the oven for 30 minutes until golden.

Four. Don't think it's our recipe though. Putting cheese in fish pie is the work of satan's minions.

Could I do it with a tomato-type sauce?

Arvo sent Leo solo to buy the fish and I've got a bit less than I really wanted.

Just do white/bechamel sauce and up the number of eggs. And/or chuck in some tinned tuna.

I am baffled by fish, unless it's battered cod. Does it show?

cheddar and cod is a surprisingly nice combo

I'm confused if it's not your recipe... why is it listed here ?

I'm in the no cheese on fish pie camp. Last one I made was prawn and salmon with boiled eggs, in a white sauce (made with the milk I poached the salmon in) under mash. ( I'm writing up these recipes for my lad to cook so went with easy to get locally things)

Not ours as in not jamanda's or mine. Probably appears under jamanda as a post from when we were moving everything from the old recipe database component thing to the one that we use now.

yep that. It might have been Cathryn. She moved loads too. But I remember Sean being rude about the cheesy fish pie, which I think sounds nice, so it was probably me.
