Well, one lot are not as ripe as they may look in my first pics, I did actually take 2 samples from 2 different bushes some distance away from each other so now I'm wondering if possibly I've got 2 different things???

They could just be all sloes as there are loads of sub-species and quite a bit of variety in size from pea- to grape-size from one bush to the next.

Stewy, you near Great Shefford by any chance? We have a lane near here that is wall to wall sloe bushes, must be about 100 bushes groaning under the weight of the crop!

They're not really ready for use yet, really need a frost before you pick and use them. There are loads of blackberries on the way too.

Thatcham Matt but I do know out that way, used to go out with a girl from Lambourn.

I also found a few Fairy Ring Champignons next to one of the bushes but they were absolutely soaked.

Better to pick them soon(ish) depending on local ripeness and chuck 'em in the freezer before using them IMHO. Round here if you wait for a frost before picking there won't be any left to pick.
