very dark here, (west Oxon) need light on to read ( although that could be my age) definitely rumbling about the sky, but only light intermittent rain here. Could really do with a good downpour as our light sandy soil needs a good soak to get in to any depth. Still sticky and hot though, have all doors and windows open still.

It went over us at about 3am. Unusually the leccie stayed on.

Get your head down, its closer than that.
The flash travels, near as dammit instantly (!86,000 miles a second - instantly).
Speed of sound nearish sea level, about 650 mph, say 600 an hour. So 10 miles a minute. 6 whole seconds for ONE mile... (and thats a whole lot of elephants!)

BTW, sunny blue skies here on the Kent Riviera at 1130, albeit still and humid.

but look Dougal - have you just shot down an urban/rural childhood myth that you count 'elephants' ,ie seconds, between seeing the flash and hearing the bang? How else am I going to know how far away the storm is?

Drizzled a bit for a while, but now a lot brighter. I count 1 Mississippi, 2 Mississippi, 3 Mississippi for a km. But then I'm young and metricated like that.

Glastonbury hit by thunderstorms

Lightning and torrential rain has delayed the start of the Glastonbury Festival in Somerset, which was due to begin on Friday morning.
The BBC's Ian Youngs said the weather for the Somerset site turned "from scorching to soaking overnight".
The first band was due on at 1030 BST, but organisers said it had been delayed indefinitely while power was restored to the main Pyramid Stage.

well it certainly doesn't look much like rain here.........

no clouds and hotter than hades in this office. .............went and got my fan back out of the ops room this morning as there was no air at all.......at least i can get some circulation of hot air

we are not too far from the coast here near ipswich so i reckon we'll get it last again which means that maybe the farmer i buy my hay from will successfully get my 200 bale allocation in.

just hope it is the type of rain that clears the air and makes it cooler and not the wrong type of rain that increases the humidity to near 100%

now considering rain dance to hasten the end of the heat wave......

will this be another year like last when we had lots of mini heat waves followed by huge storms? and power cuts?

According to 5Live's man (the same?), all 3 main stages were hit by lightening. Many tents were washed away - many of them having been pitched facing uphill, and simply filled up with water... Oh, and the BBC3 (tv) studio was flooded...
