question is i want to be able to go beach fishing trouble is nearest beach is an hour away but what are the rles etc would i be able to just turn up and fish wat wuld i expect to catch whats best bait for beach and any thing i should know to be safe? besides the obviouse

hi there ,big subject .
the basics are you can eat the seafish but not sell them ,some places have restrictions so as not to hook tourists etc
dont fall over or get drowned
a good general bait for shore fishing is very fresh oily fish or live ragworm
as a beginner i recon dont worry about fancy kit ,it is to place a bait and haul a fish so keep it simple ,

read books ,check the seafishing websites ,local knowledge is ace

Your best bet is to go to your local library and get out a book on sea fishing. You don't have to join, just get a book off the shelf and read it there, then put it back.

I haven't done much since I was a child but as far as I know there are no restrictions provided people aren't bathing there. As for bait, I've had success with lug worms although all I caught was eels. I know people round the Severn estuary have caught dogfish. You could also try spinners.

If you could let us know what your nearest areas are it would be beneficial, as there may be people with local knowledge who could give you some tips, or even take you out a few times.

As has already been said, there is no need to buy expensive gear, especially if you dont know if you are going to like it.

Depending on where you are going to be fishing could also alter what gear you are after. For example if you are going to be pier fishing you wont need as big a rod as you will for beach fishing.

My OH does beach fishing on the Dorset coast.He uses a beach caster rod and feathers for bait if its mackerall .Otherwise he uses peeler crabs and sand eels for bait if hes bass fishing.

i got givern a rod years ago a good 10yrs if not longer as i was intrested in course fishing by my grandadbut he gave me a sea fishing rod he saw it at a carboot sort of thing i dont know anything about it but just know its for the sea is there a differance between beach rod and boat rod?

Quite a difference - a boat road is short and stubby because you don't have to cast far; a beach rod is long and whippy so you can cast out beyond the surf.

Indeed & if you are a beginner at casting a fixed spool reel not a multiplier.
I've found the best multipurpose bait for beach fishing is live lugworm, ragworm second & fresh sand eel third.
& it's much better if you start to fish when the tide is out, that way your bait is always in deeper water.
If you start to fish at high tide you will be forever chasing the tide out.
If the sea is to rough your bait will literaly be thrown back on the beach so if theres a big surf don't bother.
To avoid catching swimming tourists & surfers. I always do mine at night.

I'm such a basic person. Light rod for trout. Heavier rod for sea fishing. Put appropriate lure/feathers/bait on line and cast until enough fish. Alternatively buy more freezing space.

however a boat rod can be a good pier/harbour wall tool,swing and dangle, many nice fish will come very close to the thing you are standing on
my last time in a new place i got several nice fish with a handline off the dock by looking for a flow of water which would deliver food to fish and dropping my worm there ,a few feet from the wall ,next day same tactic none

casting distance only matters if the fish are far away ,finding the fish is the most important thing ,they can be very close to your feet or far away

if im taking full kit i use a collapsable carbon fibre beachcaster 6/8 oz ,a good multiplying reel and 30lb line for general sea fishing from the shore ,rocks or docks

i put either sinking ,floating ,jigging or spinnning rig on the end depending on conditions .

this kit is not best for any task but is very adaptable to many options

i recon second hand �50 would cover it ,new maybe �100 +

hooks should be best quality metal ,strongest available ,small (you can catch a big fish on a small hook but not t'other way round ) i use heavey stainless steel about 12mm shank and 8mm dia curve with a twist and a very sharp point

forage at low tide for tackle lost by others and check good areas for fishing later and good bait

location /species/activity/tackle/skill/chance/paitience/adaptability

Forgot to say: watch the tide. Best fishing two hours before high tide and one hour after.

this rod of mine of what i can remember is its been up in my mums attic since i got it is its white about 6ft possibly about 8ft its got like a rubber ball at the but of the rod its got the reel and line with what i can remember like paper clips or simular wire as hooks. any places people would reccamend and what fish is the easiest to catch any good shops to get supplies from?

your local tackle shop should have hooks /line (old line is rubbish) oil the reel go and play

Sounds more like a rod suitable for boat or pier where casting distance isn't important.
You need something 10 to 12ft with enough strength & flex to throw a 2 oz lead 70m plus out to sea.
Something like this
