I stayed up last night and watched the Opening Ceremony In Vancover, I have to say I was quite impressed, definately worth sticking with it as the begining shows little promise. The lighting ceremony had a glitch when a mechanical arm refused to come out of the floor, but the other three appeared and the flame eventually was light. A hiatus followed whilst waiting for Wayne Gretski to get to the external Cauldron to light it, but the lighting went without a hitch.
Of course the whole Ceremony was overshadowed by the unfortunate death of a Georgian Luge competitor on a practice run prior to the opening of the games. A full video of his run has been shown on the news over here, he didn't stand a chance, he flew of of his sled on the exit to the last corner, and still lying prone he turned about 90 degrees, flew over the side wall where his flight was broken by a pillar. He was probably travelling at around 80 miles an hour when he hit it. A sad end to such a short life.
The Luge track has now been modified and passed for competition today, I expect the worlds eyes will be on that one this afternoon. |
