We're new to pigs (a year in) but thoroughly enjoying the experience. However, this evening our sow is very unsettled. The boar and the castrated male have gone off to bed but she's still pacing and 'talking'. I think she's pregnant and I reckon the deed was done on 14th Feb (how apt!) as she had a 'fat fairy' and was at one point very 'full' after Max, the boar, had been doing his stuff. It has rained today which is the first heavy rain for 6 weeks - is it possible that she's enjoying that or is it possible that there's a problem? And can we do anything? I know that a pregnancy is supposed to be 3 months, 3 weeks and 3 days.

This would be roughly the time of her season if she hadn't taken on the two previous ones...our sows tend to pace and froth at the mouth if they are in season and can't get to the boar...any chanced she could have missed before?(although I would have expected your boar to be all over her if she had) Ours don't get excited at the rain but then they live on exmoor and have seen far far too much of it but it could be that she is enjoying it. How is she today?

Thank you for asking Debbie. She seems settled again now. Yes it would have been the time for her season (as in 6 weeks into a pregnancy so 2 lots of 'heats' gone) but she's definitely not 'on'. And all the pigs live together and Max is definitely not 'on' her either

Oddly I do think it was the rain. All of the pigs normally go to bed at dusk but they've all been snuffling about still at 11pm since the big rain. Maybe it brought up some tasty things for them and, being pigs, they're scared they might miss them if they don't eat them all NOW!

This post reminds me of the very first sow that we had pig here. It was just before Christmas and our GOS sow was very protective of her newly born piglets. She wouldn't let anywhere near them so that I could check them over . She roared at me like a lion as soon as I entered the sty. I tried having a board pushed out infront of me but I really didn't fancy my chances.
Being new to pigs I hadn't a clue what to do, so I phoned the vet for advice. He asked me if I had anything to sedate her with and the bloody thing ended up consuming my entire stock of Christmas lager. The sow became very chummy with me after the first gallon or so and I had a totally tea total Christmas, because we couldn't afford to replenish supplies. Still, we were happy.
