Ellesmere I will be both beating and shooting as i enjoy working my dogs. I am not a landowner or have ever been in the military i think you may be confusing me with someone else.

Hahaha...sorry, yes, you're right. Confusing you with Deerhunter!...Oops. If it's not too late, I'd say definitely the .17, although even with a moderator it's a lot louder than a moderated .22. Its the bullet noise as much as muzzle blast. Mad

As I'm also looking at a .22 long I have a couple of questions.

1) How do you know when a bullet ricochets? Watch for traces through the scope?

2) Mad, apart from the ricochet and the more rounded trajectory why don't you like the .22 Long. Surely it will instantly kill a rabbit at 50m? I don't like the sound or the .17 removing chunks of a rabbit as those chunks should be on my plate!

Any rifle will be used for target shooting for a while.

Its not too late yet our Police force are not the fastest when it comes to firearms as i know through the many renewalls of my shotgun certs over the years.

I have to admit that the silenced subsonic does appeal to me but it was the accuracy at range of the .17 that made me uncertain which to go for.

The police have been in contact to say that so far everything is OK i just have to wait for the visit to check my security. As and when i buy a rifle i will let you know how i get on.

Oh which part of shropshire do you shoot at. It is a lovely place but it takes us (me my youngest son and my mate) an hour to get to as it is all the A49 after the motorway.

Treaco', you hear the whangggggggg of the bullet goin on its own random path. I have permissions on farms around Newport, which is close to Telford. The .17 is so accurate that you will hit the head of a rabbit at between 50 and 200 yards once properly zeroed. Did you really want to eat the head? ...But it is loud compared to the .22 long.

Oh and Treaco, I actually really like my .22, see pic above, but it's so much less accurate. I hate wounding an animal that gets away to die slowly in pain. I get a lot of that with the .22, but the .17 vapourises the head!! Check out Varmintal.net for examples

Shaun, I live close to junc 5 of the motorway, Newport near Telford. I haven't actuallt fired a single round here yet, only moved here at Christmas. I have permission on local farms but have so far not had the time to get cracking, hehehe

Let me check my cook books and I'll get back to you. I ask because I use a .22 long on an indoor range and use hearing protection. Don't you use ear plugs or protectors while shooting? From what I've read it seems a 50:50 split for people who love the .17 or .22 for rabbits. I'll tell the OH I need one of each to try. For shooting for the pot it'll only be a couple at a time at most.

I dont need ear plugs with either because outdoors the sound dissipates, and in any case, I have sound moderators fitted to both, so the .22 long is VERY quiet.

But as a beginner who needs to apply for a FAC and no land I think all I'll apply for is a rimfire rifle.

Incidentally, shooting for the pot,......try marinading in cider for 24 hours....put the diced and chopped root veg of your choice in the marinade too, with a good squirrt of tomato puree, and loads of garlic. oven roast until the marinade level ceases to cover the meat, and you will find that the meat just falls off the bone, .....and doesn't taste of rabbit...(bonus!)

Best thing would be to get out and knock on farmers doors, and ask if you can shoot their rabbits. Then after that, apply for an FAC and ask the Firearm Enquiry Officer to check that the land is safe for firearms, and ask him what calibre he would allow. He will be looking at backstops, footpaths in the area, that kind of thing. As you can see, choice of calibre is a very personal thing, slightly subjective, and mainly your own taste, so maybe buy second hand until you firm up your choice!

Yes, I do need to get something to refer to while I'm leaning. OH found a good book at the club, but it's out of print.

I must admit the smell of plain rabbit cooking can be a little strange to someone not used to it (i.e. me), taste was very good. It just seems a little daft to be buying them.
