I want to knit a funky headband for my neice's birthday but I want it to be a surprise. She will be 12 and I'm not sure how best to decide what length to knit.

I don't want to measure her head as it will give it away. Does anybody have any ideas please?

Thanks.

Make it four foot long. It'll be a real surprise that way.

Do you mean an ear warmer type thing if so make it with button fasteners and do a holey design so the buttons can be done up at any point

Tell her you're making a fancy dress costume for a 12 year old girl you know elsewhere, and need a test head.

Boglin's head (she's twelve) is 57 cm around where a headband would go.

Use elastic bands in place of wool, Royal Mail red is the colour this season. [/i]

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I think I'll go with the 57cm and buttons, then at least it should be somewhere near.

What would be the best type of wool to use, or will any do?

Thanks.

Nothing fluffy! 12 is far too cool for fluffy!

Good point Nell.

Ok I've opted for this one.

https://craftingcollege.wordpress.com/2012/09/06/so-i-know-its-not-quite-headband-season-yet/

A couple fo questions.

1. It says, To get the twist in the head band make sure you twist your cast on stitches once, then begin the first row.

How do I twist my cast on stitch please?

2. Would I need to reduce the cast on stitches to make a smaller headband?

Thanks.

Imgine you are knitting a jumper, and they will automatically twist.

Seriously, you know how you have to make sure the edge is below the needles/filament all the way round, well for this you do the same, but then twist one end once around the needle.
