Am thinking of getting a new phone for Jack for Christmas but have noooooo idea which one to get. He's got one that he can connect to the internet etc at the moment, but it weighs a ton and has to be recharged practically every two hours.

Any suggestions on what sort of *cool* phone a *cool* 18 year old might like that doesn't cost a ruddy fortune?

Err, no, not if you're serious about "cool"

Samsung Galaxy Y on Virgin for 60 squid on PAYG. Obviously I have no idea if iit's cool or not. Virgin gives you access to T-mobile and Orange so the network coverage is pretty good.

Edit to add: Boy Wonder says not as cool as an iphone but still cool if that helps.

EE is the network (Orange merged with T Mobile), from:

PAYG means you'll have to fork out for a phone. An iPhone will cost you north of 350, more for the coolest, latest. And then you get to pay for the calls, but only if you use them.

If you go on contract, you can pay 20-50 every month, but you get the phone free. And a set number of calls, texts and net access. Price will depend on how many calls/texts/surfs, and also how long you sign up for. You can sign up for 12 months, but you get a better deal for 24 months.

Go to money saving expert, and look at their phone chooser. It allows you to compare all the markets and suppliers, depending on what you want, how much you can afford, how long you want to commit for, and so on. And then, go through a cash back site, and get discount.

I think I saw you could get an iPhone for a total sum of about 160, on a minimum use, 2 year deal via Tesco there, including cashback.

Maybe I misread. Can't find anything close to that now.

ETA: Looks like it was a deal, but it's gone now. So, ignore this.

But, do use the MSE phone finder once you know what you're after.

Really, it is worth finding out whether he is android or apple-centric.

There can be a huge amount of snobbery in either camp. But if he has or is likely to have other gadgets, e.g. a tablet, it is useful to have them all on the same platform for sharing, synching etc.
