There is a substance in Parsnip leaves which is very toxic in the sun. I had very severe blisters a couple of years ago and now coverup when harvesting them

Nah, I've left town now.

I'm going with the parsnip theory. There was plenty of parsnip sap about, and the pictures I have found concur with what I had.

Just to add to the fun, I get a reaction from corncockle. Most people have never heard of it, so the 'reaction' from health people who ask if I have any allergies is interesting too.

Euphorbia family has photo-reactive sap if I remember rightly, but can't remember if it blisters.

My garden irritants .... trimming conifers gives my forearms terrible rash. And dry mossy apple trees (or similar) make my head really itchy and I daren't rub my eyes when dealing with them. Similarly, smoke from green wood also makes my head itch.

I just had a thought: if parsnips can have such unexpected effects, are there any common allotment plants that cause paranoia or delusion? That might answer a riddle for me.

that was rashes ,seen it a few times . some of the nightshades might serve for the latter ,skin contact is a plausible vector with the dark ladies . ergot on the barley crop has quite a history

Apart from the obviously illegal weed?

It's surprisingly common actually, as it is a common ingredient in bird seed.

Not normally by accidental contact though. The ergot just gave me a thought though: wonder if there is any mould in the house... not really mould weather though.

I have seen ergot and no, no chance of it being in the mould in the house. It looks like a black grain on the wheat or barley.
