I always used 12" in staggerd rows 8" apart to squeeze more in.

therefore planting distance =10". However, whats the gross yield by area? I noticed this with climbing beans, closely planted (6") I ended up with far too many beans. Next year I planted half the number, i.e. 12" spacing. Same yield!

The thing about planting distances recommended by the RHS and the like, is it will give optimum yield. If you are buying in plants, that will have a major impact on profit. There is one caveat however, sometimes the planting distances are adjusted for the requirements of machinery, such as the distance between a tractor's wheels!

As far as strawberries are concerned, unless you are very careful with the runners, they will sort themselves out by the second or third year and end up everywhere. The answer with them is to be very methodical constantly. Afraid I'm not, so if I grow them, they end up a mess very quickly.

I've got fifteen plants in four-by-three foot bed, spaced evenly. So now I need to make sure the ducks don't dig them up again and I will wait and see.

I also put the rhubarb crowns I've been hanging on to from last year in - Arvo's still got quite a bit of compost-barrowing to do for me, but we're getting there.

Nenna loves the beds around the patio - she can get down there on her walker across the lawn; and once she's there, she can go round-and-round-and-round to her heart's content

That sounds a really nice set up for her. Perhaps put her on duck patrol for a bit to stop them digging up her strawberry plants.

Oooh, good plan, I hadn't thought of that! The duck fencing seems to be relatively un-permeable - only one lady keeps getting out!

Don't want to upset anybody, but, on the three allotments closest to mine, they have very recently started to grow strawberries.

I think that it is becoming TRENDY (shock horror)!
